Cook's scientific spirit should guide climate response
Modern Australia was born out of ideas about inquiry and improvement. That should be the source of solutions from indigenous rights to climate change.
The summer’s disastrous bushfires will make this weekend’s 2020 Australia Day celebrations more sombre than usual. But Australians can also take immense pride in the resourceful and generous community response to the fires. This response – from the bravery and sacrifices of the thousands of rural fire services volunteers, to the hundreds of millions of dollars donated to support recovery efforts – has showcased self-reliant and big-hearted Australia at its best.
