Australia’s ageing Collins class submarines could still be operating in 2050, half-a-century after they first came into service, the head of the Royal Australian Navy, Vice-Admiral Michael Noonan, says.

That may be necessary after the government scrapped a $90 billion deal signed in 2016 to build Attack class submarines in partnership with French shipbuilder Naval Group, after ploughing $2.3 billion into the program.
