The ageing Collins-class submarines have been added to a Defence Department watch list for reliability and maintenance woes, raising fresh doubts about the navy’s ability to conduct undersea operations.

Just weeks after revelations five of the six submarines were out of action, Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy added the submarines to Defence’s product of concern list, triggering an urgent scramble to come up with a remediation plan.
