- Parliament has resumed. Governor-General David Hurley told parliamentarians to “advocate thoughtfully, debate respectfully”, in officially declaring the 47th Parliament open. Australia’s new Parliament will have Queensland MP Milton Dick become the new Speaker for the House of Representatives.
- Manly Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler has apologised for his team’s decision to press ahead with plans to wear rainbow-themed jerseys to promote inclusivity. His apology is about how the club executed the wearing of rainbow-themed jerseys, as the club did not consult with its players.
- NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, Trade Minister Stuart Ayres and then-deputy premier John Barilaro were briefed on the outcome of a global search to fill a senior US trade role and learnt that a senior bureaucrat had got the job, before Barilaro went on to secure the role for himself.
- Wayne Byres, the country’s top banking regulator, will step down as chairman of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority from October 30.
- Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said Labor won’t budge from its electoral mandate on its climate bill. He said this parliamentary term provides an opportunity to show the rest of the world “that not only do we have a government that gets it, we have a parliament that gets it as well”.
