The vault of the National Archives was finally prised open last week to reveal more correspondence between Australian governors-general and Buckingham Palace.
We can now read the assessments of Lord Richard Casey, Sir Paul Hasluck, Sir Zelman Cowen and Sir Ninian Stephen about Australian politics from the 1960s to the 1980s. It is a treasure trove of historical drama, reflection and sometimes brutal character assessments.
