Butler rejects health insurers’ second bid to lift prices

Health Minister Mark Butler has rejected a second round of requests from private health insurers to increase customer premiums, telling some providers they must help more during the cost-of-living crisis.

With a federal election due within months, the Albanese government is loath to approve above-inflation premium increases. The health minister has the final say over annual premium rises for about 14 million Australians with private health insurance.
