Before the NSW Nationals leader napalmed his federal counterpart, and his Transport Minister colleague gave up one of the shortest state-federal shifts ever, it looked like the Liberal Party had a shot at political history.

Not since 1920, when pro-Irish MP Hugh Mahon was thrown out of Parliament for disloyalty to the British Empire, has a federal government won a seat from the opposition in a byelection.
