Neither major party is prepared to say when it will return the budget to balance, as they match each other’s promises dollar-for-dollar heading into a tight election to be fought primarily on the cost of living.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Tuesday will deliver a budget forecasting a decade of deficits and said the timing of the next surplus “remains to be seen”.
