Budget reply is Dutton’s chance to reset and regain mojo

Heading into the budget that was never meant to be, the stakes are higher for the opposition leader because of the mounting focus on the Coalition’s almost-empty policy offering.

For someone who didn’t expect to hand down a budget this week, Treasurer Jim Chalmers sure got back into the groove quickly. The weekend before his fourth budget went much like the first three – strategically placed drops to the newspapers of all the good news the government wants you to know about, from more money for housing to more money for energy bill relief.

Of course, there was one thing that didn’t need to be leaked to media outlets: the fact that this week’s budget was on parliament’s schedule but not part of Labor’s election plan.
