Boris Johnson slumped on his seat, scoping us with his face in a semi-permanent smirk. Then a 24-year-old Brussels correspondent for the London Daily Telegraph, he was attending a press conference of his bete noire, European Commission president Jacques Delors.

Through colourful and facts-shy reporting, Johnson created a rampant European Union intent on disrupting “the British way of life”.
