Top universities say Labor’s push to impose backdoor caps on international students will confuse prospective applicants and hurt Australia’s reputation as a desirable study destination while doing nothing to fix structural funding issues plaguing the higher education sector.

Earlier this year, Education Minister Jason Clare announced plans to impose a cap on overseas student numbers to quell community angst over migrant levels amid a housing and cost-of-living crisis.
