Australian soft power can outbid China for regional influence: Conroy

Australia can outbid China for regional influence in the Pacific by offering advantages such as migration opportunities and cultural ties rather than just competing over the weight of cash, according to the newly appointed minister for the Pacific, Pat Conroy.

In an interview with The Australian Financial Review marking his twin appointments as Minister for International Development and the Pacific and Defence Industry Minister, Mr Conroy also declared his confidence nuclear submarines would be able to be built locally if the industrial strategy was right.
