Most states are pushing ahead with loosening restrictions for travellers, despite rising infections and concerns about the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines against the omicron variant.

Ahead of Queensland opening its border to Victoria and NSW for the first time in more than six months on Monday morning, Victorian officials put out a surprise announcement scrapping the need for travellers from South Africa, where omicron was first identified, to quarantine upon arrival.
