Appeal to aspiration to avert a minority government

The horse-trading that would be part and parcel of a hung parliament would just exacerbate the populism, opportunism, and polarisation that are already destabilising the political system.

One of the more remarkable findings from veteran budget watcher Chris Richardson’s audit of federal finances is the difference between the tax and spending policies proposed by Labor and Coalition adds up to “less than 1 per cent in the next four years”.

It’s yet another sign of a bipartisan lack of commitment to economic reform ahead of the upcoming federal election and a signifier of the politics Australians have had to endure in the lead-up to the election.
