The Morrison government is throwing time and effort into the Sydney seat of Bennelong amid fears that a combination of factors, including alienated Chinese-Australian voters, could result in it falling to Labor.

After pledging to co-fund with the state government a $220 million upgrade to a local bridge on Tuesday, Scott Morrison used a speech to a multicultural community lunch in the north-western Sydney electorate to empathise with Chinese -Australians against the fell hand of Beijing.
