Anthony Albanese has taken ownership of Thursday’s deal with the opposition in response to last week’s High Court decision that forced the release from indefinite detention of more than 80 non-citizens, including criminals.
As Labor MPs recoiled on Friday at what one described as being “reamed” by the opposition, Mr Albanese confirmed he oversaw negotiations between Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and acting Prime Minister Richard Marles as Labor sought to shut down the issue over which it had lost control.
