Labor frontbencher Mark Butler said he would give up his climate change portfolio in a heartbeat if Labor leader Anthony Albanese thought it was necessary to resolve growing tensions within the party.

But any move looks unlikely, with Mr Albanese maintaining Mr Butler is the best person for the job, despite calls from renegade MP Joel Fitzgibbon for him to be moved on.
