Australian Federal Police commissioner Andrew Colvin said Australians should still have full confidence in the nation's new metadata laws even though one of his investigators illegally accessed the telephone records of a journalist who received a leak of sensitive information.

Attorney-General George Brandis argued the contentious metadata laws were a necessary national security measure when they were introduced 18 months ago.
