Super tax breaks are greatly exaggerated

Treasury claims more than $50 billion in revenue is being forfeited for super tax breaks every year. This is misleading.

The raucous debate over Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ planned new tax on superannuation balances over $3 million has made it difficult to pinpoint how generous the tax settings are for super.

The purported “cost” to the government’s revenue of super tax breaks has been greatly exaggerated by Labor, Treasury and other critics.
