Why I’m glad I was diagnosed with autism at 50

Autism It is exhausting and lonely. But in the aftermath of my formal diagnosis, I was grateful to have this new way of making sense of my lifelong weirdness.

“But you don’t look like you have autism.”

If I had a dollar for every time someone said that to me this year, I’d have $32. Just joking. I don’t really do Rain Man-style counting. But Rain Man-related stereotypes are thought to be one of the reasons so many girls with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) slip through the diag­nostic net and suffer greatly as a result.
