Australian universities have produced their worst financial results in history with a combined $1.3 billion loss, with only five of the 29 that have reported their 2022 accounts being in surplus and only one improving its financial position on the year prior.
Experts put the extreme volatility down to the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a dire impact on international student revenues in some – but not all – universities.
