Free fees and zero barriers to entry to childcare during the pandemic resulted in a surge in very low-income families being able to use local centres.

The boom is evidence that barriers to entry, including workforce activity tests for parents, having to deal with Centrelink and excessive costs, are denying the very children who benefit most from early childhood education, says Sandie Wong, an associate professor at Macquarie University and research fellow with Goodstart Early Learning.
