The NSW government will force public schools to adopt a new staffing policy after talks over an accord on teacher numbers and class sizes broke down.

As part of its push to give principals greater control over budgets and the mix of staff, the proposed staffing agreement did not lock in class sizes or the number of senior teachers. In the absence of those guarantees, the teachers’ union refused to sign the agreement by 5pm on Wednesday.
