Ministers will no longer be able to veto research grants but the federal government has reserved the right to intervene in areas of national security, under changes to the Australian Research Council.
Education Minister Jason Clare will tell the AFR Higher Education Summit on Tuesday that the ARC will no longer be able to be used as “a political plaything”, as he announces a raft of change to ensure the independence of the body.
