Life expectancy goes backwards for the first time in 30 years

Life expectancy in Australia has gone backwards for the first time in more than 30 years, falling by 0.1 years in the 2020-2022 period due to more than 10,000 COVID-19 deaths last year.

A boy born today is expected to live to 81.2 years and a girl to 85.3 years, according to data released on Wednesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
