Life expectancy in Australia has gone backwards for the first time in more than 30 years, falling by 0.1 years in the 2020-2022 period due to more than 10,000 COVID-19 deaths last year.

A boy born today is expected to live to 81.2 years and a girl to 85.3 years, according to data released on Wednesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
