Former chief justice warns unis of 'chilling' checks on free speech

The author of the government's report into academic freedom has warned university leaders they will have to "cull" existing codes of conduct that have a "potentially chilling" effect on campus speech.

Robert French, the former High Court chief justice who is now chancellor of the University of Western Australia, told The Australian Financial Review Higher Education Summit in Brisbane on Tuesday that the reach of the new code was up to the "culture" of each institution.
