Why Australia needs to be at the G7 table

Australia is a Pacific nation that has felt the sharp edge of Chinese pressure. That gives it something to say at a meeting of the old transatlantic powers.

Anthony Albanese’s visit to Hiroshima next week to attend the G7 summit as a guest will be his 13th international trip in the past 12 months – capping a relentless year of travel that began within hours of becoming prime minister.

For any Australian prime minister facing budgetary, cost-of-living and other political pressures at home, it can be difficult to justify partaking in the seemingly endless carousel of international summits.
