Canada’s prime minister is only the latest left-of-centre political leader to leave office in a fog of disillusion and domestic discontent.
There was a moment of pathos outside the prime minister’s residence in Ottawa last week as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau approached the lectern to announce his resignation.
Literally moments before beginning to speak, a gust of wind blew away what appeared to be his prepared remarks. A leader who ascended the Canadian political stage espousing “sunny ways” for his people could only watch as an icy draught dispensed his pages into the nearby snow.
