Trade-off: When feta isn’t feta any more

Australia and the European Union are inching closer to a free trade deal that will focus on the potential for investment and co-operation in renewable energy. But right now, our biggest export to Europe is, of all things, coal.

In one of those politely ignored ironies, Australia’s biggest export to an extremely carbon-conscious Europe is actually coal.

The protracted negotiations for a free trade agreement between Australia and the European Union should result in a much deeper and broader trade relationship with – presumably – far less weighting towards coal in coming years.
