Industry and government are being urged to increase their spending on military research and development, amid fears Australia risks falling behind the regional arms race because of a failure to invest in innovation.
As China makes great advances in its military technology, further clouding an uncertain strategic environment, Australia's total spending on defence research has declined as a share of gross domestic product, despite the Morrison government's planned $200 billion recapitalisation of the Defence Force.
