PM must read the tea leaves on China security and trade

There’s reason to be sceptical about whether Albanese’s visit will meaningfully improve Australian-Sino relations or simply serve as political window dressing for both sides.

China has long been a tricky bedfellow on trade and security. It is therefore to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s credit that he is embarking on a six-day diplomatic mission to China, which underscores the more pragmatic foreign policy approach he has taken compared with some of his predecessors.

Business and investment links are expected to feature high on the agenda of the trip, which will span Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu (also known as the Panda capital) and will include meetings with President Xi Jinping and Chairman Zhao Leji of the National People’s Congress.
