Kissinger’s advice to aspiring leaders still holds

The arch foreign policy realist both intrigued and infuriated those around him and so many who have tried to assess his legacy. But he was consistent in his reading and application of history lessons.

Henry Kissinger, who died on Thursday (AEDT) aged 100, was consistent to the very end on the importance of history in political life and practice.

Before the publication of one of his last books, World Order, in 2014, the scholar-turned-envoy who led Richard Nixon’s foreign policy before informally advising a succession of US presidents, lamented the malign influence of a relentless 24/7 news cycle on leaders’ and officials’ policymaking.
