India and Pakistan are in a dangerous cycle of escalation over Kashmir

The Modi government has attempted to position the strikes as legitimate counter-terrorism rather than acts of war.

Kashmir has once again become one of the world’s riskiest regions, caught in a major escalation of tensions between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan, whose decades-old animosity threatens regional stability.

Close to midnight on Wednesday, the Indian Air Force used Rafale Jets to carry out what is being termed as the largest aerial attack on Pakistan since the 1971 war between India and Pakistan that led to the creation of Bangladesh.
