Cruising at more than five times the speed of sound
Professor Michael Smart of the University of Queensland (UQ) is fairly sure he has a unique title: he does not know of any other institution worldwide that has a chair of hypersonic propulsion.
He says the title reflects the fact that the Brisbane-based university is a world leader in the research of hypersonic flight, which is flight through the atmosphere at speeds above Mach 5.5, or more than five times the speed of sound.
