Australians should use that flawed conflict as the basis for an honest appraisal of when we should fight in the future.

Now that the last Australian troops have withdrawn from Afghanistan, there is an important question to answer. Was it worth it?

In honour of the dead and injured I want to say yes. However, given the result of the 20-year conflict, the only realistic response is a reluctant no.
