Most conventional ambassadors of friendly countries leaving Canberra, if they have anything to say at all, will invariably praise their host country, Australia, and its government and leaders.

But Shingo Yamagami, who returned to Tokyo after a two year-plus posting in Canberra as Japanese ambassador, was no conventional diplomat.
