All bets are off if Trump returns to the Oval Office

It’s hard to imagine free societies hanging on globally against an emboldened group of dictatorships if Team Democracy loses Uncle Sam as its key player, which is a distinct possibility.

Next year, 2 billion people in 54 countries will go to the polls. While all elections affect the world, none will be more consequential than the one in the United States, where 100,000 voters in a handful of states will decide whether Donald Trump will get the keys back to the Oval Office.

Forget political ideology, as one senior Democratic and diplomatic figure observing Trump openly promising to use the US justice system to punish his enemies grimly told me; a Trump comeback means “the end of the republic”.
