Successful politicians tell stories that attract voters. Examples include Robert Menzies’ 50s story about middle-class Australian families prospering, and Bob Hawke’s 80s story about “bringing Australians together”.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers have their Future Made in Australia story, which was amplified in Tuesday’s federal budget. The problem is that it’s not so much a story made to fit into a slogan, but several – at times conflicting – yarns.
