The energy transition will fail without more mines

Our scorecard for the government must include whether initiatives ensure more critical minerals projects come online, faster, and without cutting corners, while also dovetailing with market forces.

The yellow brick road to our renewable energy future will be paved by Australian minerals.

These so-called critical minerals – including lithium, cobalt and rare earths – are essential for technologies powering electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and advanced electronics. Despite wishful thinking in some quarters, other metals not typically listed as “critical” are equally vital. Wind turbines rely on steel made from iron ore and coking coal. Copper, gold and silica are integral to modern chip-making.
