Climate change absorbs everyone’s attention but this week’s State of the Environment report is a reminder not enough is being done about the extinction crisis.

It’s often said that governments, particularly new ones, have a surprisingly limited budget of political capital and managerial bandwidth.

Prime ministers and cabinets have to pick battles carefully, weighing up their own short-term electoral survival against the longer-term national interest. At best, it means the number of big ideas and changes they can tolerate is in the low single digits.
