Coalition to water down vehicle efficiency scheme

Car manufacturers who breach emissions caps under Labor’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standards scheme will be exempted from penalties under a vow by Coalition leader Peter Dutton to not enforce stiff fines.

The pledge will come a day after opposition energy spokesman Ted O’Brien was forced to reaffirm the Coalition’s commitment to meeting global emissions targets after earlier appearing to leave open the possibility it would withdraw Australia from the Paris Agreement if elected next month.
