Can Labor help the Pilbara go green?

Labor now has a rare, politically unencumbered opportunity to secure the nation’s energy supply, industrial competitiveness and climate transition.

Newly minted environment minister Murray Watt’s trip to Western Australia this week is an important gesture for symbolic and substantive reasons. The Queensland MP’s appointment is unlikely to represent a radical change to the re-elected Albanese government’s approach to the portfolio. Yet the decision to make Perth his first visit is a clear sign that Labor is looking for a “reset” of the so-called nature-positive reforms that faltered under his predecessor, Tanya Plibersek.
