Two lessons learnt from the Modest Member
For the Financial Review’s milestone year, we resurrect Bert Kelly’s legendary column published from 1968 to 1980. From our Platinum 70 Magazine out on Friday, August 20.
The Modest Member was the nom de plume of South Australian federal Liberal MP Bert Kelly, under which he wrote a weekly column in the Financial Review from 1968 to 1980. Kelly used his column to criticise protectionism and promote the benefits of free trade and competition. In so doing, he helped pave the way for the reforms of the 1980s. The column below, written by a current federal Liberal MP, continues the tradition.
