The long shadow of COVID-19 will demand agility

Australia may face a semi-shuttered world for some time. That puts an enormous premium on sharp policy making at home.

The tragic resurgence of COVID-19 through India’s 1.4 billion people in past weeks, like a giant bushfire with a new wind behind it, has abruptly changed global ideas about the pandemic’s persistence.

Vaccinating the world will be slow, and will have to keep one step ahead of the mutations that thrive in such huge outbreaks. Australia may face a world which is at least partially-shut or out of bounds until 2022 or 2023.
