The failure of incumbents to deal with the cost-of-living crisis might well be a common thread in recent elections in the Western world (“Vote puts incumbents on notice”). However, at the heart of these electoral failures to deliver is the reality that the political centre’s radius is becoming smaller, more crowded and more dependent on going further down the rabbit hole of being business-friendly.
Consequently, the policies and changes emanating from the centre are best characterised with rare exceptions as not fit for purpose and too little or late.
