Social media giants that fail to adequately protect their Australian users would be hit with multibillion-dollar fines under new rules recommended by a sweeping review of online safety laws.

The review conducted by former deputy chairwoman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Delia Rickard makes 67 recommendations to toughen online safety, including the new penalties for breaches of the law.
