Institutional investment giants owning large stakes in Australia’s biggest companies will face new scrutiny from a parliamentary inquiry investigating stock market ownership concentration by the $850 billion industry superannuation sector and index funds operated by BlackRock and Vanguard.

House of Representatives economics committee chairman Tim Wilson announced on Monday the new inquiry will investigate the extent of common ownership of publicly listed companies and the impact on investment decisions, competition, consumer harm and market behaviour.
