More than a million Australians are estimated to be stuck in isolation under the close contact rules for COVID-19, as increased case numbers and chronic staff shortages hit business and snuff out a wholesale return to the office.

The retail and hospitality sectors are urging the national cabinet to ease the rules, as close to 60,000 new COVID-19 cases challenge the country’s push to return to normal.
