Political brawls sweep the supermarket aisles
Supermarkets are once again an appealing target for politicians wanting to demonstrate their good intentions on helping consumers with cost-of-living pressures.
Jennifer HewettColumnistThe huffing and puffing over Coles and Woolworths is a regularly recurring political phenomenon. This time around, the level of community pain over the cost of living makes attacks on the two big supermarket chains particularly appealing diversions.
With previously red-hot anger over Qantas airfares or the Reserve Bank’s rate rises receding at least temporarily, targeting Coles and Woolworths allows politicians to demonstrate their earnest desire to help ordinary Australians fight back against higher prices.
