More grants for universities won’t fix our productivity problems

Australia’s R&D ecosystem must be based firmly in commercial realities, pull in the resources of private enterprise and avoid merely pushing policy positions from Canberra.

Productivity has been an unpopular topic for more than a decade. It erupts briefly among economists, then fades away as interest rates and inflation occupy our attention.

But during a time of deficit budgets, record government debt and falling living standards, productivity becomes important because increasing output with the same resources can grow the economy and build national wealth.
